advice about your Resume:
As to using your Resume and in Our opinion . . .
In our opinion, TARGET a
Version of your Resume to whoever you are sending it to.
Absolutely stick to just one
page.
- The average HR type looks at your resume 6 seconds. They never look at page 2.
- They are scanning for green flags and red flags.
- Once they make a 6 second pass, they end up with say, 20 out of 100.
- To get there, the same guy picks up the 20 and gives each a 10 second look.
He is really looking for red
flags NOW because when he sends over the 6 to be considered for interview (or
to be invited to test) he doesn't want to get in trouble for missing a red flag
on one or more.
Those who will go for
interview or test make it through the next guy who takes that pile of 6 or 7
down to 2 or 3 who will get a phone call . . .
A.
Think from their end - what
do THEY want? What do THEY care about.
B.
To do that, don't include
anything that won't matter to them.
C.
Stories sell – AND they don’t
CARE where you went to High School . . .
For example, if you took everything
off and left only the welding history that applies for the target, You would
then have room to add just a few lines that give them "the tone" of
you.
Yes, I know, you are not
looking for an HR position - but employers want leadership and people skills in
every employee – even welders.
You may have been around
long enough and we sure have been around long enough to know the cost of paying
a jerk employee, even if they are so good at what they do, it is hard to let
them go.
They always cost too much, don't they?
So, in our opinion tell a 2
line story about a true incident in which you made a situation work with
others.
Tell a second 2 line tech
story about making something work out or creative problem solving.
It STILL all has to be on
one page.
